The following is a message from Surrey Hospitals Foundation’s donors, the Hoonjan family:

I come from a village known as Sehjra in Punjab, India. In 1970, I made the big leap to immigrate to Canada with the support of my Bhua Ji and Phuphar Ji (my parental aunt and her family). The journey wasn’t easy—I faced many struggles along the way—but I never lost hope. That determination is what made me stronger.

In 1974, I was thrilled to reunite with my family, who I had left behind in India. My wife, three children, and later my mother joined me in Canada. We started our new life in Vancouver but eventually settled in Surrey, BC, which I still proudly call home today. Our family grew in Canada by two more children. My youngest daughter was born at Surrey Memorial Hospital, and since then, I’ve had the joy of welcoming 11 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren, all born at this amazing hospital.

Giving back to the community is something that’s very important to me. In 2004, my daughter and grandson were involved in a serious car accident. The exceptional care they received, combined with Waheguru’s grace, inspired me to give back.

As Gurpurab approaches, I want to share a message that’s close to my heart by Guru Nanak Dev Ji: Naam Japo (always remember Waheguru), Kirat Karo (work with honesty), and Vand Chhako (share with those in need). I am truly grateful and blessed!

On Gurpurab, Sikhs around the world celebrate the anniversary of the birth of Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism, who was known for his generosity and kindness.

We are deeply grateful for the generosity of the Hoonjan family, who donated $50,250 this year in support of the Guru Nanak Emergency at Surrey Memorial Hospital. If you would like to make a donation in honour of Gurpurab, please make a gift online or connect with our team at 604-588-3371.
