Momentum is building, and we are closer than ever to making world-class cardiac care a reality for Surrey Memorial Hospital. With construction already underway on two brand-new Cardiac Catheterization Labs (Cath Labs), we are reaching a pivotal moment—but we need your help to keep progress moving at full speed. These state-of-the-art labs will transform how we diagnose and treat heart disease, ensuring patients south of the Fraser receive life-saving care without delay, right in their own community.
In 2023, we launched our cardiac campaign with an ambitious goal: raise $10 million to bring advanced cardiac care to Surrey Memorial. Thanks to generous donors like you, we’ve already secured $9 million—but we need to raise the final $1 million by March 2025 to stay on track. Every dollar now is critical to keeping construction on schedule, equipping the labs with the latest technology, and ensuring that when the doors open, we’re ready to provide urgent, life-saving treatments without delay.
Our key milestones
Together, we’re reaching significant milestones in bringing these advanced facilities to life. Here’s where we stand:
Surrey Memorial Hospital’s cardiology-interventional radiology suites in the Critical Care Tower
- Design development phase complete.
- Finalizing early procurement.
- Completion and occupancy scheduled for late Fall 2025.
Clinical operations
- Location renovations are underway.
- Recruitment is underway.
- Sponsorship completed for Cardiovascular Technologist.
- Orientation pathways for nurses have been developed.
- Department workflows have been drafted.
- Vendor selection in review process.
- Cath Lab nursing positions are ready for posting.
Equipped with state-of-the-art imaging technology, the new Cath Labs will be used to view arteries and assess blood flow to and from the heart. These specialized labs will feature advanced imaging systems, including an image intensifier or flat-panel detector, viewing monitors, an injector pump, angioplasty balloons, and an X-ray image intensifier for fluoroscopic imaging.
Why new Cath Labs matter
Nowhere in B.C. will the burden of heart disease be felt more acutely than in the Fraser Health region.
- Surrey is projected to become B.C.’s largest city by 2029.
- Surrey’s aging population will be the largest amongst all health authorities in the province.
- Our region is expected to have one of the largest South Asian populations in North America – a community at four times the risk of heart disease.
Given these factors, ensuring timely access to life-saving cardiac interventions at Surrey Memorial Hospital is not just important—it’s essential. By keeping care close to home, we can provide faster treatment, improve recovery outcomes, and reduce the emotional and financial burden on patients and their families. A message from our Head of Cardiology
“We are deeply grateful for your generosity in making our new Cath Labs a reality. We know that patients recover better when they are cared for close to home—where they feel the support of family, friends, and their community. Having access to life-saving cardiac interventions at Surrey Memorial Hospital not only means quicker treatment, it will significantly reduce stress and fear for patients during an incredibly vulnerable time. Thanks to your incredible support, we can offer this critical care to our community and in our community, ensuring that recovery is faster, safer, and more comfortable. Thank you for making such a lasting impact on the lives of so many.”
— Dr. Courtney Young, Department Head (Chief), Cardiology, Surrey Memorial Hospital
