February is Heart Month, and it is truly inspiring to reflect on how our community comes together to support such an important issue.
This month, we are thrilled to share that with the support of our community and generous donors, Surrey Memorial Hospital will be opening two brand new Cardiac Catheterization Labs (Cath Labs). These specialized areas will let cardiac specialists perform minimally invasive tests and advanced life-saving cardiac procedures, allowing residents south of the Fraser to be treated in their own community.
In 2023, we launched this critical campaign with the aim to raise $10 million for cardiac care. Thanks to donor support, we have raised $9 million – leaving only $1 million left to raise to reach our March 2025 goal!

Why new Cath Labs matter for Surrey and the South Fraser region
Nowhere in B.C. will the burden of heart disease be felt more acutely than in the Fraser Health region – the largest amongst all health authorities in the province. With Surrey’s growing aging population, and the city being projected to become the largest in B.C. by 2029, it is essential that Surrey Memorial Hospital be able to provide quicker access to urgent cardiac interventions and deliver life-saving treatments right here, close to home.
Thank you to our lead cardiac care donors
Thank you to our two leading donors who have helped us bring these two, brand new Cath Labs to Surrey Memorial Hospital: The Godwin family and the community of listeners from RED FM.
The Godwin Family: We are deeply grateful to Elaine Godwin and the Godwin family for their generous gift of $3 million supporting the new Cath Labs in honour of the late Dr. Tom Godwin. This remarkable contribution not only advances cardiac care in our region but also reflects the passion and dedication Dr. Godwin devoted to his patients and his work at Fraser Health.
RED FM – 2023 Gurpurab Radiothon: Thanks to the generosity of community of listeners, volunteers, donors and incredible leadership of 93.1 RED FM, we are proud to announce a record-breaking $1,000,013.13 raised during the 2023 Gurpurab Radiothon. This marks the most successful one-day radiothon to date for RED FM. The funding of the new Cath Labs would not have been possible without the collective support and dedication of everyone involved.
A message from our Head of Cardiology
“We are deeply grateful for your generosity in making our new Cath Labs a reality. We know that patients recover better when they are cared for close to home—where they feel the support of family, friends, and their community. Having access to life-saving cardiac interventions at Surrey Memorial Hospital not only means quicker treatment, it will significantly reduce stress and fear for patients during an incredibly vulnerable time. Thanks to your incredible support, we can offer this critical care to our community and in our community, ensuring that recovery is faster, safer, and more comfortable. Thank you for making such a lasting impact on the lives of so many.”
Dr. Courtney Young, Department Head (Chief), Cardiology, Surrey Memorial Hospital
