When Cloverdale Paint’s Tim Vogel learned about the pressing need for a child and youth mental health stabilization unit in Surrey, it struck a chord.

The CEO of Surrey’s largest family-run business quickly realized that this relatively small unit would have a huge impact on young people in crisis and their families.

Inspired to give, the multi-generational Vogel family got together and decided it was time for an extraordinary contribution to the hospital located in the community where they built their successful paint and coating business. In 2015, Cloverdale Paint made a $1 million donation to Surrey Hospital & Outpatient Centre Foundation in support of a new Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Stabilization Unit (CAPSU) at Surrey Memorial Hospital.

Now under construction, CAPSU will have 10 beds to serve children and adolescents from across the Fraser Health region who need hospital care for stabilization of acute mental health problems.

Operating in the United States as well as Canada, Cloverdale Paint is the largest Canadian-owned and operated paint and coatings manufacturer. Committed to supporting health care and education, the company had donated to Surrey Memorial Hospital for many years, but this is by far the largest charitable contribution in the company’s 83-year history.

“When the unit opens up it will be really exciting and we will be very proud,” Vogel says. “I know that our employees and customers also feel that way. For our little company in Surrey BC to contribute a million dollars to the hospital is exciting. It’s something that we can all be proud of it – our family, our employees, our customers, our suppliers – it’s really neat. ”

Jane Adams, President & CEO of Surrey Hospital & Outpatient Centre Foundation, explains that CAPSU will help young people in crisis and link them with the longer term mental health services that they need.

“We are fortunate to have the support of a family business that understands the importance of investing in health care that will support families when they need it the most.”

The $1 million donation from Cloverdale Paint, and a further $1 million in contributions from donors, will help to ensure that CAPSU is a truly therapeutic unit, with decor, components and furnishings designed to foster a calm and healing department. Fraser Health will provide more than $4 million in capital costs for this project, as well as an annual operating budget of more than $4 million.
