Surrey Memorial Hospital recently celebrated a remarkable moment in its cardiac care journey with the unveiling of The Dr. Tom Godwin Family Cardiac Care Unit. This newly named unit is not only a symbol of medical excellence but also a heartfelt tribute to an extraordinary individual whose contributions have left a lasting impact on cardiac care throughout the Fraser Health region.
A Gift That Will Save Lives
This milestone is a testament to the generosity of Elaine Godwin and the Godwin Family, whose extraordinary $3 million gift is supporting the new Cardiac Catheterization Labs at Surrey Memorial Hospital. Their donation is a heartfelt commitment to the lifelong family legacy of ensuring that patients living south of the Fraser receive the best possible cardiac care when they need it most.
The Legacy of Dr. Tom Godwin
Dr. Tom Godwin was more than a physician – he was a pioneering cardiologist who founded the first Cardiac Catheterization Lab in the Fraser Health region in 1968. Throughout his career, he was deeply committed to his patients, earning the admiration and respect of his peers, staff, and the community he served. He spent his final days at Surrey Memorial Hospital’s Neurology Unit, where he passed away in April 2013.
“Our family is very pleased to help support the development of these two much-needed cardiac cath labs at SMH, which will result in better outcomes for cardiac patients in our community. We also hope that our donation will inspire and challenge others to find ways to contribute to improve health care in their own communities.” – Godwin Family
A Family’s Commitment to Community
On behalf of Surrey Hospitals Foundation and the entire community south of the Fraser, we extend our deepest gratitude to Elaine Godwin and the Godwin Family. Their contribution not only honours Dr. Godwin’s remarkable career, but also ensures that his passion for helping others continues for generations to come.
