Surrey Memorial Hospital (SMH) continues to prepare for the fall 2025 opening of its two new cardiac catheterization labs which will establish the hospital as the regional centre for cardiac care south of the Fraser. Dr. Dwayne Conway has been appointed as Regional Co-Director of Interventional Cardiology, and a specialized training program has begun for the incoming cardiac nursing team.
APPOINTMENT OF REGIONAL CO-DIRECTOR
We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Dwayne Conway as the Regional Co-Director of Interventional Cardiology at SMH. With over 20 years of experience, Dr. Conway has led cardiac programs, developed catheterization labs, and introduced advanced interventional cardiac care across major health systems in the U.K.
“Dr. Conway brings invaluable expertise in establishing standalone cardiac services, having successfully set up and delivered a standalone at Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust in 2010,” says Dr. Courtney Young, Department Head (Chief) of Cardiology at SMH. “This directly relevant experience makes him uniquely qualified to lead SMH’s new program.”
Dr. Conway’s appointment comes at a pivotal time, as SMH prepares to open two state-of-the-art Cardiac Catheterization Labs that will transform how we diagnose and treat heart disease.
SPECIALIZED TRAINING FOR CARDIAC NURSES IN SURREY
A team of registered nurses is undergoing specialized training to deliver expert interventional cardiac care from day one for patients.
Through a collaboration with Royal Columbian Hospital, nurses are gaining hands-on, real-time experience in an active cardiac catheterization setting. This immersive approach allows them to build essential skills in patient monitoring, procedural coordination, and the use of advanced cardiac tools. More than just learning technical procedures, the training emphasizes the entire patient journey, from arrival and treatment to recovery.
This training ensures that the team at SMH will be well prepared to guide patients through some of the most critical moments of their lives with confidence, compassion and precision.
WHAT THIS MEANS FOR PATIENTS AND FAMILIES IN SURREY
Once operational, SMH’s new catheterization labs will provide faster diagnosis and treatment for heart disease, helping reduce patient transfers to other facilities and ensuring care is delivered when and where it’s needed most. As the first catheterization labs available south of the Fraser, patients in this region will benefit from:
- On-site interventional procedures for heart attacks and other cardiac emergencies
- Shorter wait times for diagnostic and therapeutic cardiac care
- A highly trained, responsive cardiac care team
With Dr. Conway’s leadership and a passionate team of specially-trained cardiac nurses, SMH is well positioned to become the regional centre for cardiac care south of the Fraser.
